Get to know ‘The quiet Chatham revolutionary’

Tea and Flowers, 1849 by Kate Mechedou, Mrs Bakers Medway Theatre Company

Researched and filmed in lockdown, this project shows the potential of Luton, Medway people. Despite Victorian sexism and ill health, illustrator Anne Pratt inspired the British love of botany, far beyond her Medway home. 1849 and 2020 found Anne and the performer at similar ages. Surprising parallels become obvious. At first glance, Anne is an archetypical Victorian maiden aunt – obeying etiquette rules, with the ‘invisibility’ conventionally assigned to the middle aged spinster writing dubious poetry! But getting to know her, reveals why the sub-title is ‘The quiet Chatham revolutionary’. Can a recording still conjure a sense of intimacy with viewers?
